simple pleasures

This post is inspired by my wine-bottling tonight (peach and blackberry meads/pyments). My ladyfriend and I came to a conclusion that there is much joy and entertainment to be had by simple hobbies such as winemaking (actually meadmaking for me) and canning at home. They are ancient skills (canning not so ancient) that are still quite applicable, although they are forgotten by most of the population. If you haven't tried both, I would highly recommend them. There are plenty of resources available on the net for both hobbies. Plus there's a rule that you must get at least a little drunk when you bottle your wine :bear_w00t:

PS. Anyone have any similar experiences with other survival/homesteading skills?

My buddies and I had a horseradish making "party" and they also have sausage making parties that involve several people getting together and getting it done while drinking a few beers and having a few laughs.... good stuff. It's good fun and you end up with some good food or drink in the end.

I've got some pear wine still in the fermenter making a nice aroma in the house. It was a great year for pears here in N. Illinois. So I've tried to take advantage of it. I've got another 30 lbs in the freezer to do when this batch gets racked. I've already done 12 gallons of Apple wine this fall. Hopefully my blackberries will come in next year.

Got any favorites.

YEP, We throw some locally processed T-bones on the grill and have a Kraut making party.
Everyone takes turns cleaning the cabbage/shredding/ and mashing the cabbage in the 3 or 5 Gal crocks.
Close friends who "GET IT" and are prepping the best we can with what we got and enjoying the shared friendship.
The hard part is hauling the crocks into the vans and trucks after the days' festivities.
